Andrew Goodwin feels that music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. Music videos don’t necessarily have a narrative structure but they are built around the song. Goodwin strongly believes that traditional narrative analyses don't apply to pop videos because they approach narrative from a different angle compared to films. Pop videos for example use the singer as narrator and character, with the singer looking directly at the camera trying to involve the audience with their ‘performance’. The visual pleasure music videos cause, encourage repeated viewing. Furthermore, there is the idea that the music as well as lyrics have a relationship with the visual. The videos tend to have no closure/ending and builds to a climax before they fade away. There can be an intertextual relation with the music video aswell, demonstrated in ‘Juicy J – Shell Shocked’ where he promotes The teenage Mutant ninja Turtles movie and incorporates clips from the actual movie into the music video. Also, the word 'shell' in the title 'Shell shocked' links the theme of turtles. As well as this the lyrics speak about unity in battling which matches the theme of the movie.
Moreover, Goodwin claims that there are three types of relations between songs and videos:
Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture.
Illustration - This is when the video tells the story of the lyrics accompanied by dancing which expresses the mood or feelings in the song.
For example: Labrinth - Last Time

The reason why this is a good example of illustration is because the lyrics speak about travelling and discovering a whole new world. The narrator/performer 'Labrinth' accompanies a little boy who discovers an alien world.
Amplification - This is when the video gives a new meaning to the song that doesn't contradict the lyrics but add layers of meaning.
For example: Rudimental - Feel The Love ft. John Newman
This is a good example for amplification as the lyrics speak about showing love to one another and in the video it shows the people having a strong sense of community, firstly in the barbershop and then riding horses together in a suburban area.
Disjuncture - This is where there isn't much of a connection between the lyrics and the video or where the video contradicts the lyrics.
For example: Dj Snake & Lil Jon - Turn Down For What
The lyrics speak about firing up something to smoke and taking shots as a way of enjoying yourself but the video contradicts this as people are hurting each other, destroying their apartment and disturbing neighbours. Also, there are scenes where a woman's breasts are dancing for her and smashing things in the house which has no connection to the lyrics at all.
